Coming soon on iPhone

Read 5 minutes of motivation to unlock your apps.

Gatekeep locks the apps you lose hours in. To open them, you read, write or train for five minutes first. Finish, and you get fifteen minutes of screen time.

You don't want to delete TikTok. You want your phone to stop dragging you down.

How it works

One rule, and it never moves.

No schedule to set, no window to plan. You want to scroll, so you do your motivation first.

  1. 1

    Your apps are locked

You choose the apps you lose time in. Open one and you meet the gate instead of the feed.

  2. 2

    You read before you scroll

A few lines chosen for what you're working on: a quote, an affirmation, a reminder of why you started.

  3. 3

    Your apps open

Five minutes done, fifteen minutes of screen time. When the window closes, the gate comes back.

5 minutes of motivation = 15 minutes of screen time

What the research says

42%less daily scrolling

That is what researchers measured when they put a reminder of people's own goal in front of Facebook.

Lyngs et al., “I Just Want to Hack Myself to Not Get Distracted”, CHI 2020. A small study: fifteen people in that group, using Facebook on a laptop. Gatekeep applies the same idea to the apps on your phone. The figure is theirs, not ours. Read the study

What you read

Six categories. You pick, nothing is guessed for you.

No algorithm, no invisible personalisation. You choose what you want more of, and that is what Gatekeep serves.

01

Scroll Less

Getting your attention back from the feed, with no guilt trip and no villain.

02

Work & Productivity

Starting the thing, finishing the thing, and not letting the day disappear.

03

Personal Growth

Becoming the person you keep telling yourself you'll be.

04

Calm & Mindfulness

One slow minute before the noise starts again.

05

Hard Times

For the days that are simply hard, without pretending they aren't.

06

Relationships

The people you actually want to be present for.

Three ways to do your five minutes

Reading is not the only way through the gate.

The format is drawn for you, and the other two are always one tap away, so nobody is stuck with the one they can't use where they are.

Read

Cards you move through, each asking one small thing of you. Never a second feed to scroll.

Write

A few short prompts. Type them, or say them out loud and let the phone write.

Train

A short lesson of micro-exercises, the way a language app teaches you a verb.

Hard mode from day one: leave the session and the timer pauses. Waiting unlocks nothing.

Why Gatekeep

A blocker you don't have to trust blindly.

What you block never leaves your phone

Gatekeep uses Apple's Screen Time. The apps you choose are held as tokens that cannot be read back into names, so they go nowhere, to nobody, us included.

No account, no email, no sign-in

There is nothing to create and nothing to log into. Your settings, your streak and anything you write stay on the device.

Hard mode, on purpose

No daily skip, no five-more-minutes. You can always turn protection off in your own settings. But there is no shortcut that keeps the gate and dodges it.

Before you scroll, remember who you're becoming.

Gatekeep opens on iPhone soon. Leave your email and you'll hear about it once.
